How to Make Sure You Don't Fall Asleep On the Road

It’s easy to dismiss drowsy driving as a modern day concern. After all, it’s rarely in the media and it’s not something we think about when we think about thing that could go wrong on the road.

However, drowsy driving is a significant cause of crashes. It is a factor in at least 328,000 accidents every year. These cost up to $109 billion in lost wages, legal fees, medical bills, and more. That is quite a bit of time and money to lose just because someone fell asleep at the wheel.

In addition, drowsy drivers perform very similarly to drunk ones. In fact, people who haven’t slept in 20 hours drive similarly to those with a blood alcohol level of 0.08%. That’s high enough to get a DUI in most places! Clearly, driving drowsy is a bigger problem that we usually think it is.

How to Avoid Driving Drowsy

If you must drive when you’re tired, make the time to take a caffeine nap first. Caffeine is a good short-term way to stay awake, though it won’t help if you are chronically exhausted. Even the best cup of coffee takes 20-30 minutes to kick in, though. So drink your cuppa, then take a short nap. When you wake up, you’ll be refreshed enough to drive for a while.

If you can’t even manage that, consider not driving at all. Sure, it’s inconvenient to call a cab or an Uber and it might be expensive, but what is that cost compared to the lives you might save? Be responsible, suck it up, and let someone else get you where you need to go.

Are you often exhausted behind the wheel? Do some work to get better sleep. Sure, it can feel impossible if you have an unusual work schedule, suffer from sleep apnea or another sleep disorder, or struggle with insomnia. However, nearly everyone can do something to get more sleep.

If you’re not sure where to start, consider your sleep hygiene. Put yourself on a sleep schedule, so your body knows when to rest and when to wake. Make sure that your bedroom is conducive to sleep by ensuring that it is dark, quiet, and free from distraction. Keep all screens out of your bedroom, as their light can disrupt your rest, too.

You may also want to consider buying a new mattress. Sure, it’s an investment, but it’s an investment in yourself and your own well-being. Your driving isn’t the only thing that will improve if you get more, and better, sleep. Do your research to find a mattress that supports your body during sleep, so you don’t wake up sore or with aching pressure points. In the end, your improved sleep will be worth all of your efforts!
